In 8, you looked at Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and a new technology that it provides called Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML). This language allows a UI and all its interactions to be defined with simple XML markup tags. This empowers a separation of design and development, so that the designer can become an integral part of the development process. In the past, a designer would make a mock-up, or comp, of the desired vision for the web site or application. This might be a set of wireframe drawings, pictures, simple animations, or scribbles on a piece of paper. The developer would have to take these visions and implement them, constrained by what the technology would permit. The result was often disappointing for both parties. With XAML, the designer can use tools (such as the Microsoft Expression suite) to design the graphics, interactions, animations, and media that they desire to have in the site, and the developer can simply take this XAML and activate it by writing the code behind it that allows it to be used as an application. Thus, the designer and the developer are working from a common set of artifacts, allowing next-generation designer-centric experiences to not just be possible, but to be relatively easy to implement. Silverlight is a plug-in for the browser that renders XAML and exposes a programming model in JavaScript. Thus, web developers have a new suite of tools and technologies in XAML that will allow them to take their sites to the next level of richness, but they still

Consumers call producers to discover portlets, ask for portlet markup, or send portlet events to the producer for processing. They aggregate the portlet markup fragments into a portal page, and return that to the end user s web browser. The portlet markup fragments can come from WSRP portlets or locally running portlets. In many cases, the consumer will be a proxy portlet that uses the Java portlet API to talk to the local portal and uses WSRP/SOAP to communicate with the producer. Not every consumer will be a portlet or otherwise embedded in a portal. Another scenario is to use the WSRP API to include syndicated applications in a web application. For instance, the navigation for the web page could be generated locally, and the remote portlet can be displayed in the content area. The web application would thus be responsible for much of what a portal does, but would not display any other portlets.

As only the root Canvas can receive focus, only the root canvas will receive these events. The keyDown event will fire when a key is pressed and the Silverlight control has focus. WSRP portlets are components running on the producer that process actions and return markup or content. The WSRP portlets can conform to the Java portlet API, or they can be proprietary Java portlets, .NET portlets, or any other language. In addition, software applications that are not portals can be producers of WSRP portlets.

The first versions of the Java Portlet API (JSR 168) and WSRP share core portlet concepts, so JSR 168 portlets are compatible with the WSRP standard with no additional code. WSRP portlets return markup requests, which correspond to the JSR 168 render-handling requests. WSRP portlets also process interactions, which
