Your application will use the org.apache.lucene.search.IndexSearcher class to search the index for a query. After you construct the query, you can create a new IndexSearcher class. IndexSearcher takes a path to a Lucene index as an argument to the constructor. Two other constructors exist for using an existing org.apache.lucene.index.IndexReader object, or an instance of the org.apache.lucene.store.Directory object. If you would like to support federated searches, where results are aggregated from more than one index, you can use the org.apache.lucene.search.MultiSearcher class. Lucene indexes are stored in Directory objects, which could be on the file system or in memory. We use the default file system implementation, but the org.apache.lucene.store.RAMDirectory class supports a memory-only index.

To better understand server controls, you will develop an ASP.NET website with one web form. The web form represents a typical Contact Us page. The page will be used by end users to contact you with any questions, feedback, or comments about your website. Creating a Website To create a new website by using Visual Studio, you need to choose the File New Web Site option. This option opens the New Web Site dialog box shown in Figure 11-4.

This is the stage at which ASP .NET initializes the page in memory on the server. It first parses through the definition of the ASPX, initializing each of the controls on the page as it was originally defined. Should this not be the first time the page has been requested, ASP .NET will then look through the view state and update the status of each control according to the name/value pairs that it deserializes out of view state. At this point, it fires the Page.Init event. You can use this event to perform actions upon initializing the page, but UI actions are not permitted because the UI rendering has not yet occurred.

To use the IndexSearcher object once you create it, call the search() method with your query as an argument:

Possible locations are File System, IIS Virtual Root (HTTP), and FTP Folder (FTP). In our example, we will choose File System. The path specified after the Location drop-down is the target folder where the website will be created. Make sure to select Visual C# as the language. Click the OK button to create the website. Visual Studio will create the website with a single web form named Default.aspx. Designing the Web Form The next task is to design the Contact Us web form.
